When I’m decorating for the holidays I usually have two goals in mind: 1) Make things look seasonal and festive, and 2) make things comfortable for holiday guests. The first one is easy – we put up our tree this past weekend and the twinkling Christmas lights and my collection of vintage ornaments are giving our living room some major holiday vibes. I also upped my décor game this year and added garland to our mantle, hung up some brightly colored stockings for the first time since we moved in, and have been tucking bottle brush trees and fairy lights all around our downstairs living spaces.
The second item on that holiday “zhushing” list takes a little bit more thought! I like to do a walk around the house and try to put myself in the shoes of guests that might be visiting for parties or weekend stays, and try to add some details that will make them feel more at home. Clearing out some spots on our entryway coat rack, adding some festive touches to the guest bedroom, hanging wreaths up in our entryway, and stocking up on things like extra toiletries, and boxes of tissues.
This holiday season, my friends at Scotties shared some boxes of their tissues with me in their new winter designs. The patterns are really fun – I love that they come in a variety of designs so I could pick boxes to match each area of my home I was decorating. They have stylish designs that are nice enough to keep out in our living spaces, but don’t stick out and take away from my festive décor! Plus, they’re neutral enough to blend in with my rooms long after the holidays have passed.
I’ve been tucking them into each room – usually nestled among some of my Christmas knick-knacks – to create comfort for my guests when they’re visiting this holiday season. I know when we’re all clinking cocktails and telling stories in the living room this year, and we’re crying laughing, those boxes will come in handy!
