I recently had a chat with someone about our favorite seasons. My response was very specific – I love the first part of fall the best. Fall in New England has two distinct parts to me. That first part when school starts but the weather is still a little bit warm, and the days aren’t yet too short, and there is an abundance of beautiful colors in the trees and at the market. Then the second part is November, where it’s freezing and dark and we’re really just counting down until spring again! I do love those first fall days though, and can’t think of a better reason to savor those early warm autumn nights than with a pretty harvest-themed dinner party.
My friends at Christmas Tree Shops®andThat! challenged me to style a fall harvest tablescape using some of their stylish (and affordable!) seasonal pieces in stores now. It is a bit of a challenge to decorate for fall at my house, because so much of my personal style is rooted in cool blue tones that are a departure from a traditional fall palette. When I went into the store though, I was totally inspired by so many of the ever-changing assortment of products I found – particularly all of the rustic textures, and bold patterns. I decided to build a table setting with those textures as the inspiration and layer in elements that were distinctly fall, but also distinctly my style!
At the base of the tablescape I used a blue ticking stripe pattern flat sheet as the tablecloth – it’s one of my favorite entertaining hacks! A twin sized flat sheet makes a perfect tablecloth. They come in so many fun patterns and colors — it’s an affordable and stylish little trick. The ticking stripe had a soft, country-style look to it that I loved for this theme.
For the place settings I layered beautiful patterned ceramic plates with rich blue and green tones underneath decorative wooden pumpkin plates. I loved these pumpkin plates for their rustic styling – and snagged a matching pumpkin cutting board for the fall season too! I paired the plates with hemstitch napkins in a dark autumnal green color, my own gold silverware, and simple stemless wine glasses.
For the center of the table, I wanted to create a focal point with some fall-inspired design elements. I started with a beautiful rustic wood tray that grounded smaller elements like gold candle holder shaped like fall leaves and small bouquets of autumnal flowers in copper mule cups (these copper wine glasses would be a fun way to add more warm metallic tones to the table!). I also added in a big baker dish that matched our patterned plates and filled it with apples, scattering a few additional apples down the table for a seasonal nod. I love how all of the elements of the design come together for a look at that feels like the season, but still looks right at home with my year-round décor!
